During the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, Exeter’s industry was established using locally available agricultural products, and its location on a fast-flowing river allowed for easy access to water power. An early industrial site emerged on drained marshland on Exe Island to the west of the city. However, when steam power replaced water in the 19th century, Exeter was too far away from sources of coal and iron to develop further. Consequently, the city’s relative importance declined, and it was spared the rapid 19th-century development that transformed many historic European cities.
